Rashida Tlaib and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Tweet

Of course Rashida Tlaib acknowledged Nakba Day. It may be the only true Palestinian holiday, and she is nothing if she is not a Palestinian, as she reminds us at every opportunity.

Here is her Nakba Day tweet:

No, it just wouldn't be Nakba Day without the requisite Israel-bashing and historical inversion. After all, those uppity Jews had the nerve to survive a war of extermination against them and then create a thriving nation immediately after. They just refuse to lay down and die. No wonder the Palestinians hate them.

While local Jewish organizations seemed to have nothing to say regarding this tweet that demonizes Jews and Israel, some people did speak up.

MJAC board member, Harry Onickel, had this to say in the Algemeiner:

Tlaib is free to tweet her bigoted, ahistorical beliefs to her heart’s content, but referring to “ethnic cleansing” and Palestinian neighborhoods being uprooted and destroyed are lies as big as Jews being given “a safe haven” by her ancestors after the Holocaust.
The “Nakba” was the failed attempt by five Arab armies to strangle Israel upon its rebirth in 1948. While Israel survived and now thrives (to Tlaib’s obvious chagrin), it was Jews who were ethnically cleansed from Judea and Samaria and eastern Jerusalem by the Jordanian occupiers. It was Jews who suffered massacres at Arab hands even before Israel’s War of Independence. It was 850,000 Jews who fled or were forced out of Arab and Muslim countries after Israel was reborn.
Tlaib is a sitting congressional representative engaging in an anti-Jewish blood libel and historical revisionism as odious as any coming from the Holocaust denial industry. The Nakba is a carefully crafted, 72-year-old lie designed to usurp the documented facts in order to deny Israel’s legitimacy. The ultimate goal is to destroy the world’s sole Jewish state.

ZOA also spoke up. They are one of the very few major Jewish organizations to consistently speak up in favor of Jews and Israel. They're not weak-kneed Jews afraid to raise the ire of Jew-haters. They call out the anti-Semites when they see them.

The Zionist Organization of America strongly condemns Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s (D-MI) deplorable, lie-filled May 15 tweet falsely accusing Israel of “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinian-Arabs, as well as her false claim that Palestinian-Arabs are “indigenous” to the Land of Israel and referring to the creation of Israel as a catastrophe.” Israel has been America’s most-trusted and most-loyal ally in the Middle East. We call on Tlaib’s Congressional colleagues, especially the Democrats, to repudiate her tweet. Given the dramatic increase in attacks against Jews, her words can only serve to inflame Jew-hatred.

Rabbi Aryeh Spero of the Conference of Jewish Affairs also called out Tlaib.

“The ethnic cleansing going on today in the Middle East and northern Africa is being done mostly by Arab-Muslim leaders and jihadists who are systematically purging these areas of age-old Christian communities, indigenous tribes, and remnants of the few Jews remaining in these areas.”
Rabbi Spero concluded: “When speaking of ethnic cleansing, Rashida Tlaib should look in the mirror and see that it is her ideology that today is the greatest perpetrator today of ethnic cleansing in the world.”

For a sickening contrast, here is what Congressional Representative Andy Levin tweeted, on May 18, three days after Tlaib's tweet:

Yeah, I don't get it either.
