The ADL Takes on Hate - Sort of

There was an August 29th event at U of M Dearborn called TAKE ON HATE. One of the participants was the ADL. There were others.

Here is the poster:

Notice, if you will, some of the people and organizations the ADL (and the JCRC) were in league with.

There was Rashida Tlaib. As if we weren't already of her not-exactly-Jew-friendly past, Alex VanNess at The Clarion Project reminds us:

Freshman Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has managed to rack up a long list of anti-Semitic and extremist remarks in her short tenure in the House of Representatives.

Her anti-Semitism is so blatant that the Israeli government rejected entrance to Israel for a trip planned to “Palestine” by Tlaib and her anti-Semitic cohort Congresswomen Ilhan Omar.

The trip was sponsored by the Palestinian-based organization Miftah, a group with a long and sordid historyof sympathies towards terrorists and support for the BDS movement (a movement which has been deemed anti-Semitic by the definition of anti-Semitismas adopted by the U.S. State Department and 31 other countries). Miftah, in just one example, has accused the Jewish people of using “the blood of Christians in the Jewish Passover.”

Following Tlaib’s swearing-in ceremony in Congress, she hosted a private dinner for close friends and family in Detroit. One of her guests was Abbas Hamideh, an anti-Semite who regularly praises Hezbollah and its leader Hassan Nasrallah. He also claims Jews have no history in Israel and that the Jews should “go back to Brooklyn.”

Clarion Project has highlighted several of Tlaib’s other friends and closest supporters who came to Capitol Hill to celebrate with Tlaib as she was sworn into Congress. Most of them have long histories of antisemitism.

Then there is the Islamic Center of America, which as VanNess reports:

The Islamic Center of America is the largest mosque in the United States. The mosque has hosted Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, as a guest speaker. Farrakhan has a long history of anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-white and conspiracy-filled preaching.

Its former imam, Hassan al-Qazwini, boasted of his closeness to Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, a spiritual leader of Hezbollah. The mosque held a memorial service for Fadlallah when he died in 2010.

Qazwini claimed that ISIS was created by Israel. In a YouTube sermon titled “Connection Between ISIS and Israel? – Imam Hassan Qazwini,” he states, “ISIS is playing the role of the arm of the Zionist in the Muslim world, to kill more Muslims and non-Muslims … The number one beneficiary of all of these atrocities, I tell you, is the Zionists, and it is the Zionist regime.”

Qazwini has claimed that Bernie Sanders was “an honorable man, even though he is a Jew” and that the French Government was creating a breeding ground for terrorism.

These are two out of many. There is also The Islamic House of Wisdom, The Islamic Center of America, The Islamic Institute of Knowledge, the Arab-American News, and other Jew-bashers.

And wasn't as if the ADL (and JCRC) were unaware of these groups. From an ADL email sent out before the event:

“[W]e know there will be people in attendance with whom we do not always agree. But we can think of no other more relevant organization than ADL to be heard from on the topic of the rise of hate in our country. We put our differences on certain topics aside and raise our voice with community partners who want to ‘Take On Hate.’”

What the ADL doesn't get is that by partnering with people and organizations with whom they "do not always agree" they are destroying their own credibility. How does THE organization founded to combat anti-Semitism claim to still be relevant when they are excusing overt and unapologetic anti-Semitism as "differences on certain topics?" Who do they think they are fooling by kowtowing to these hate mongers? Do they really think that now Tlaib, Imams Elahi and Qazwini, and the Arab American News will accept them as equals? Does the JCRC really think that when things really get ugly between Israel and Hezbollah that certain attendees won't be marching through the streets of Dearborn like they did in 2006?

As NPR reported in August 2006:

Daily protests occur in Dearborn. At one recent demonstration, organized by the Congress of Arab-Americans, about 1,000 people attended. College-age men asked, in call and response fashion, "Who is your army?" Protestors responded: "Hezbollah." "Who is your leader?" they were asked. "Nasrallah," the chanters responded. Many carried placards of the Hezbollah leader. A few days earlier at an even larger demonstration, more than 15,000 turned out, about half of Dearborn's Arab community.

Those who regularly attend the demonstrations tend to be the most strident.

"Oh, Jews, remember Khaibar," the marchers chant. "The army of the Prophet will return."

The line is a reference to Khaibar, a Jewish town north of Medina that, according to Islamic tradition, was overtaken by the Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century. Once defeated, the surviving Jews of Khaibar were forced into serfdom. Two decades later, they were expelled from the Arabian peninsula.

Thanks to the laxity of the ADL and JCRC, oh, and Andy Levin, who was also listed as a host of TAKE ON HATE, anti-Semites have become a lot bolder in their hatred - because they can.

According to the TAKE ON HATE website, Dawud Walid, Executive Director of CAIR-MI is a member of the steering committee.

But it's not just Walid whom we should be wary of. As Act for America reminds us, CAIR's troubles run much deeper than one person:

One last question: when it comes to Jews, will this group be taking on hate or promoting it? And what will the ADL, JCRC, and Andy Levin say when they do get stabbed in the back by members of this group? I'm only asking because it won't be the first time for the ADL. Recall Tamika Mallory's attack against the ADL when they were enlisted by Starbucks to help in Starbuck's anti-bias training. (Yes, I know, the whole Starbucks bias episode was ridiculous, but it is a great example on how twisted things have become in the world of battling bias and taking on hate.)
