Dear President Schlissel:

The Michigan Jewish Action Council (MJAC) finds the bigoted conduct of Professor John Cheney-Lippold and your tepid public statements regarding it reprehensible.

Both diminish the character and stature of the University of Michigan.

Professor John Cheney-Lippold refused to provide a letter of recommendation for foreign study to Israel to a deserving student because he supports BDS. However he may try to justify his political views, his conduct is an act of anti-Semitism.

Professor John Cheney-Lippold’s conduct violates Federal Department of Education Title VI and Title IX.

Professor John Cheney-Lippold’s conduct violates State of Michigan Department of Education policies.

Professor John Cheney-Lippold’s conduct violates the University of Michigan’s Standard Practice Guide (SPG) policies.

Professor John Cheney-Lippold’s conduct violates policies expressed since at least 2013 by the University’s President, Provost and Board of Regents.

It appears that at the time he rescinded his offer to write a letter of recommendation, he believed his tenure protected him from disciplinary action. Tenure raises the standards for termination and includes due process protections, but tenured faculty can and do get fired from colleges and universities.

In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, with great wisdom and prescience, "When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You're talking anti-Semitism".

Omar Barghouti was the co-founder of BDS. He stated that the sole purpose of BDS is the extermination of Israel.

Jewish students and professors at the University of Michigan are enduring the same anti-Semitic brutality that Jewish students and professors in Germany endured in the 1930s.

MJAC is impatient to learn the sanctions Professor Cheney-Lippold will face.

Very truly yours,

Ronna H. Ross, LSA ‘69

Secretary, MJAC
