The Democrats’ Anti-Semitism Problem Isn’t Going Away

David Harsanyi, in the Federalist wrote this article on the Democrats' anti-Semitism problem. It hit the internet a week ago on February 11.

The problem is that “anti-Zionism,” the predominant justification for violence, murder, and hatred against Jews in Europe and the Middle East, is a growing position on the American left. While Omar embraces the worst caricatures of this ideology, it’s her core contention regarding the Jewish state–not her clumsy “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”-style insults, which are just a manifestation of her underlying position—that are most consequential.

One of the dishonest arguments regarding Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who we recently found out wrote a piece for a publication of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, is that they are merely being “critical of Israel.” Yet no serious person has ever made the claim that being critical of Israel’s policies is anti-Semitic. Israel has had both left-wing and right-wing governments over the years. And like governments in any liberal democracy, they can be corrupt, misguided, or incompetent. Millions of Israelis are critical of their own nation’s policies every year without any fear of repercussions. Israel isn’t Iran or Turkey, countries that most of Israel’s critics never disparage.

While many people see the anti-Semitism being expressed by Democrats as a problem, there are others, both Democratic officials, and apologists for Jew-hatred who, since then, have been working hard to excuse or dodge the issue. Sometimes they try to distract our attention with, "Yes, but the Republicans . . . !" or "Because the Republicans said . . . !" Some of these excusers, dodgers, and distractors claim to be Jews themselves. Newsweek, for example, has this column by Bend the Arc's chief strategy officer, Ginna Green.

As a means to achieve this xenophobic future for our country, Republicans have weaponized anti-Semitism with a degree of consistency and deliberation that makes Rep. Omar’s choice of words, however regrettable, pale in comparison: first through campaign ads and conspiracy theories that use anti-Semitic tropes to rile up their base, and then through calculated attacks to divide Democrats by accusing them of anti-Semitism.

Let’s be clear: anti-Semitism does exist among Democrats and progressives. The difference is that anti-Semitism is actively exploited by the right, with the intended results being a divided, angry and fearful America and an end to the pursuit of a true multiracial democracy.

Trump and the Republicans’ weaponizing of anti-Semitism is an effort to entrench their own power and a calculated distraction from the pursuit of the better America that most Americans, Jewish or not, want to see. They get away with this primarily because tropes about racism and anti-Semitism tell us, wrongly, that people of color and Muslims are more anti-Semitic than white Christians—so someone like Trump is automatically exempt, while someone like Rep. Omar is automatically suspect.

See what I mean? Bend the Arc, launched in 2015 by Alexander Soros, the son of George Soros, threw their support behind Keith Ellison in the 2016 elections. Unsurprisingly, they are also fierce defenders of Linda Sarsour. This is undoubtedly why Ginna Green was given a Newsweek platform. You can find this same opinion expressed in other Progressive news sources.

So while David Harsanyi is correct that the Democrats do have a problem, Democrats, Newsweek, and the rest of that team will continue to try to spin it into something plaguing Trump and Republicans. Read their misleading arguments so that you know what we're up against. But don't you buy their nonsense.
