Where Are America’s Jewish Leaders?

This is an excellent question. Where are America's Jewish leaders? Where are Michigan's Jewish leaders? Are they speaking up about Rashida Tlaib's anti-Semitism? Are they protesting to the University of Michigan regents about the Judeophobic undercurrent plaguing the university? If they are, we at MJAC have missed it. Instead, they seem to be attacking pro-Israel Donald Trump. And this is after eight years of supporting Barack Obama who stabbed Israel in the back.

Of course, a major factor contributing to the silence was the evolution of increasing numbers of “non-Jewish Jews,” so ignorant of their heritage that they regarded social justice and their Democratic political affiliation as the foremost factors in their Jewish identity.

Veteran Jewish leaders who did understand the situation were fearful that criticism of Obama would jeopardize their funding.

Maybe some of these Jewish groups have forgotten that their mission is to do more than collect donations and paychecks and be seen with the "right people." Maybe they've forgotten the part about supporting Jews and Israel.

The most striking example of this Jewish anti-Trump agitation is the Anti-Defamation League, whose mandate is to fight antisemitism and bigotry. Today it has become a radical extension of the Democratic Party. Dispensing with a long tradition of bipartisanship, it openly lobbied against Senate confirmation of Mike Pompeo for secretary of state. It concentrated on radical right antisemitism and soft-pedaled the greater threat from the left; refused to endorse anti-boycott legislation on the grounds that it limited freedom of expression; and generally failed to react with any vigor against Muslim and extremist anti-Israel elements who abuse — sometimes violently — Jewish students and suppress pro-Israel activity on college campuses.

The purported human rights movement Black Lives Matter incorporates anti-Israel passages in its platform and campaigns against anti-boycott legislation. Yet it is still endorsed by the ADL and enjoys the support of many Jews — a clear demonstration of how Jewish identity has become submerged by progressivism. Indeed, left-wing Jews wishing to be regarded as “progressive” are discovering that a prerequisite to their acceptance requires a hostile attitude to Israel.

One major Jewish group that is strongly standing up for Jews and Israel is ZOA. How have other Jewish groups been reacting to ZOA's strong pro-Israel, pro-Jewish stance? Not so well.

Yet the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, comprising 51 affiliates, which remained silent over the past 10 years, saw fit to sanction Morton Klein, president of the ZOA, the one organization that ignored political correctness and assumed the primary voice speaking out against Jewish left-wing hysteria. It censured him personally and his organization for insults and ad hominem attacks.

Klein condemned the cowardly behavior of purportedly mainstream Jewish bodies like the Presidents’ Conference itself, AIPAC, the World Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Committee, and Jewish federations that failed to criticize other Jewish organizations slandering Trump from ostensible Jewish platforms.

Yes, it is sad. It's also another reminder that the Jews' biggest enemies have always been apostate Jews, in this case, Jews who have converted from Judaism to Progressivism. Yes, they still insist that they are Jews, and in some ways they probably are, but one has to wonder when Progressive politics come before Judaism.

Here is an open letter from ZOA's Mort Klein to the ADL on Ilhan Omar and her "apology."

Omar has never apologized for falsely calling Israel an “apartheid” state!

Yet ADL proclaims Omar gave an “honest apology” and is “committed to a more just world.”

And just last week, on January 17, Rep. Omar defended her previous antisemitic anti-Israel statements, and renewed her attack on Israel for defending innocent Israelis from Hamas rockets. Omar said on CNN “I don’t know how my comments would be offensive to Jewish Americans. My comments precisely are addressing what was happening during the Gaza war and I am clearly speaking about the way the Israel regime was conducting itself in that war.” (See “Congresswoman Ilhan Omar Defends 2012 Anti-Israel Tweet Widely Condemned as Antisemitic,” by Benjamin Kerstein, Algemeiner,Jan. 17, 2019.)

Notice also how Omar used the word “regime” when referring to Israel. The term “regime” is generally reserved for fascist dictatorships and totalitarian governments. Antisemitic Israel haters commonly demean Israel by using terms such as “Zionist regime” and “Israeli regime” when referring to Israel.

Omar has also never apologized for insultingly calling Israel a “regime”!

Yet ADL proclaims Omar gave an “honest apology” and is “committed to a more just world.”

Omar also supports BDS – the terrorist-backed campaign designed to economically destroy, delegitimize and demonize Israel and Jewish businesses, workers, cultural activities, students and academics.

One day, we hope that the ADL will come back to our side and battle against anti-Semitism, even when it comes from a Progressive politician.
